Tools

Thursday, December 4, 2008

I really enjoy tools. I spent many years with inadequate tools trying to do jobs that needed to be done. Growing up poor and with a single mother we learned to make do. We never had an adequate set of tools and so I never knew that the investment in a good set saves time thus money and stress. And having the right tool and knowing how to use it provides a deeper understanding of the object it's meant to manipulate.
Today it seems that while the type and number of tools are increasing, because of the disposable nature of the Konsumer Kulture, mainstream society is less and less capable of repairing and modifying their environment. I say mainstream because there is also a growing heretical movement of those that are interested in modifying and repairing the objects of their world.
However, it might only seem as if maker culture is growing to me because I'm looking for it...
